PREVELANCE & OPPORTUNITY

  • OVERALL...

Young/Emerging Adults typically can rely on support from parents or other close supports, but those who lack that support does not have the protection and resources that are provided with close and trusted support. These youth are less likely than their supported peers to be employed pursue postsecondary education and are more likely to experience economic hardship, criminal justice system involvement, mental health struggles, and substance use struggles.

  • FACTS

    • 67% of people who are between the ages of 18-24 with anxiety or depression don’t seek treatment.

    • 55% of college students reported not knowing where to go for help for their mental health.

    • Rates are continuing to increase, as at least 3.5 million young adults experience homelessness.

    • Between 1.2 and 1.9 million young adults in the US are diagnosed with a serious mental health condition.

  • THE REALITY IS...

Both child & adult community mental health systems are not designed to meet the unique developmental needs of the young/emerging adult population, and there is stil struggle for major investments in supporting youth’s transition to adulthood. Surveyed young adults report needing a program that supports needs falling into four categories: personal needs, environmental needs, concrete supports, and support services.

Saving Our Unique Lives is developing a culture, programs and access for solutions that help fill this gap in services.
